The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced the recipients of 2021-22 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program awards this past July. With a total of 169 grant applications received statewide, the City of Pico Rivera was selected among the 59 applications that were approved for funding. The City will be awarded $332,000 plus a local match of $43,015 to fund the City’s proposed Historic Whittier Boulevard Multimodal Revitalization Plan. The proposed Historic Whittier Boulevard Multimodal Revitalization Plan will include all of Whittier Boulevard up to the City limits of Montebello to the west and Whittier to the east. The purpose of this project is not only to revitalize “El Camino
Real” in the City of Pico Rivera with just pavement improvements, it will also serve as a catalyst to the ever-evolving modes of safer and healthier transportation options that are or will be available in the near future. The Plan is not only about revitalizing the road; it also will revitalize the area once the project has been completed. Whittier Boulevard has long been seen as an economic gold mine with the opportunity for thriving businesses and housing along this historic road. Once the Plan has been completed, the look and feel of Whittier Boulevard will be changed for the better, attracting not only just residents but visitors and new business opportunities that will boost our local economy. Community Meetings and Stakeholder Meetings have not yet been announced for this project. More information about the future of this project will be forthcoming in future editions of the Profile.
