Did you know, that the Los Angeles County Fire Department responds to three times the daily average of home fires on Thanksgiving Day than any other day throughout the year. In order to not be part of that statistic, here are some Thanksgiving cooking tips from the Fire Department.

» Have a fire extinguisher readily available in the kitchen.

» When cooking, stay in the kitchen. If you have to leave the kitchen for any reason, it’s recommended to turn off the burners or the oven. Unattended cooking fires are the number one cause of nationwide residential fires.

» Be cautious when wearing aprons and loose-fitting clothing over an open flame because it could ignite and catch fire.

» Keep any flammable items such as wooden spoons, kitchen towels, oven mitts, or any type of flammable food packaging away from open flames.

» Keep children away from the stove.

» Keep knives, cooking thermometers or sharp objects out of children’s reach. Additionally, keep matches and lighters stored in a secured cabinet or drawer.

» Ensure kids stay away from hot foods and liquids because they can cause serious burns.

Remember, if there is any type of emergency, dial 9-1-1. Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
